Scripture Overview & History
The Vachanamrut is a compilation of 273 spiritual discourses. Over a decade, Bhagwan Swaminarayan's senior paramhansas (saints) recorded nearly 2,000 sermons. Ultimately, they selected 262 discourses as canonical, with 11 additional discourses accepted by the Ahmedabad diocese. The four main compilers of this sacred scripture are:
- Muktanand Swami (1758 – 1830)
- Gopalanand Swami (1781 – 1852)
- Nityanand Swami (1756 – 1852)
- Shukanand Swami (1799 – 1872)

The scripture is categorized chronologically and geographically based on the locations where the discourses took place:
- Partharo (પરથારો Preface): Preface sections describing Shri Hari's manifestation, childhood, and traits.
- Gadhada I (ગઢડા પ્રથમ): 78 discourses focusing on Atmanishtha (self-realization) and devotion.
- Sarangpur (સારંગપુર): 18 discourses focusing on the glory of the Sant and overcoming ego.
- Kariyani (કારિયાણી): 12 discourses emphasizing devotion to the manifest form of God.
- Loya (લોયા): 18 discourses explaining the supremacy of Bhagwan Swaminarayan.
- Panchala (પંચાળા): 7 discourses detailing the characteristics of single-minded devotion.
- Gadhada II (ગઢડા મધ્ય): 67 discourses on the lifestyle of a true devotee and divine incarnations.
- Vadtal (વરતાલ): 20 discourses explaining the four pillars of Ekantik Dharma (Dharma, Jnana, Vairagya, and Bhakti).
- Ahmedabad (અમદાવાદ): 3 discourses focusing on keeping the mind constantly engaged in God.
- Gadhada III (ગઢડા અંત્ય): 57 discourses containing the essence of Satsang and principles of liberation.
- Khagol Bhugol (ખગોળ ભૂગોળ): Astrological and geographical letter dictated by Shriji Maharaj.
